What is Meeting Place of the People Inc.?

MPP Inc. is a non-profit organization that serves the communities of Bonfield, Calvin, Mattawa, Mattawan, Papineau-Cameron, North Bay and surrounding areas by bringing about economic, cultural and social development through language, arts, culture and heritage.

Why was Meeting Place of the People Inc. created?

MPP Inc. was created to meet specific findings in the 2009 Mattawa-Bonfield Economic Development Corporation (MBEDC) Strategic Plan that identified language, arts, culture and heritage as necessary for the economic, cultural and social development of the region.

How did Meeting Place of the People Inc. come about?

MPP Inc. was born out of the idea of wanting to create a place that draws people together in the areas of Language, Arts, Culture and Heritage and to utilize these assets to bring about social and economic enrichment to the communities it serves.

Inspiration for its creation came from the people and the region known as "Mattawa Voyageur Country", an area located in northern Ontario. This area is rich in natural beauty, history and culture with the predominate languages being First Nations, French and English.

Inspiration for its name came from the Ojibwe word "Mattawa" which means, Meeting Place of the Rivers (referring to the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers).

This Meeting Place, of both the rivers and the people, is located in the Town of Mattawa, the hub of the area.

What is the role of Meeting Place of the People Inc.?

The role of MPP Inc. is to administer the language, arts, cultural and heritage components of the MBEDC 2009 Strategic Plan and utilize them to bring about economic, cultural and social development to the communities it serves.

What is the mandate of Meeting Place of the People Inc. and how will it benefit the region?

MPP Inc. is mandated to utilize language, arts, culture and heritage as a means of creating sustainable employment; expanding the tourism sector; attracting and retaining new and existing residents; promoting the areas environmental, cultural and historical assets; attracting and retaining business development and investment; as well as fostering collaboration between community partners. It is also responsible for promoting and celebrating: linguistic duality and French culture in Canada; linguistic duality, Aboriginal languages, other languages, arts, culture and heritage in Mattawa Voyageur Country. In addition, MPP Inc. will provide language and cultural services that respond to the needs of children, youth, adults and families as well as community and newcomer settlement services.
